About New Years Resolutions

Every year we start off with new resolutions. Promises we intend to keep but many of us fail to follow through with them. Why do we do this ritual every year? Perhaps the problem lies within us. I don’t feel it is the new resolutions that we are failing, I believe it is the extent of the resolutions. Maybe we are setting the bar to high.

It is perfectly alright to set new goals for ourselves, and believe me the ones I make, at that moment I do intend to keep. However, this is not always the case. Many of our new resolutions we have made come as the spur of the moment answer to the over asked question: “What is your New Year’s Resolution?” An answer we did not have the time to plan and really think about.

Many of us set our dreams and aspirations as these new goals. For example, last year my new goal was to lose weight, not original, I know (follow me anyway). The problem with that goal was it was too broad. I should have made it more precise, like lose 5 lbs. or 25 lbs. either way the goal we set for should be well thought out and planned.

What I suggest we all do is to take out a pen and paper and jot down as many resolutions we can come up with then take a little 5 minute break and go back to it. Now, when you look it over again, think about the ones that belong on plant Jupiter and cross them out. Next take a good look at what is left, and cross out all the ones that do not appeal to you. What you should have left is 3-4 new goals to pick from. I want you to choose one of these to be your New Year’s Resolution. Make sure it is one that you can feasibly attain. One that is not too hard, but not too easy either.

Once you have your New Year’s Resolution, create a plan to attain it. Think of this plan as your map to the final destination. Right out the little steps all the way to the big steps.
